Quentin Verreycken is a Research Associate (Chercheur qualifié) of the Belgian Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique – FNRS and Assistant Professor of History at UCLouvain (campus Saint-Louis Bruxelles). He has held visiting and postdoctoral appointments at Harvard University, the University of Münster, and the University of Southampton.
He earned his PhD in History from Université Saint-Louis – Bruxelles and UCLouvain, two institutions that merged in 2023. He had previously completed a BA and MA in History at the same universities, and holds a second MA in Medieval and Renaissance Studies from KU Leuven.
A historian of the late Middle Ages and early modern period, he works at the intersection of social, political, cultural, and legal history. His current project explores the legal, social, and political responses to military atrocities in the contested border regions of France, England, and the Low Countries.
Quentin is the author of two monographs written in French: Crimes et gens de guerre au Moyen Âge (Presses universitaires de France, 2023) and Pour nous servir en l’armée (Presses universitaires de Louvain, 2014). His work has also appeared in leading academic journals, including Revue historique, French Historical Studies, History Compass, Crimes, Histoire & Sociétés, and the International Review of Penal Law.
His research has been supported by several competitive fellowships and grants, including funding from the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS), the Belgian American Educational Foundation, the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In 2018, he was awarded the Herman Diederiks Prize by the International Association for the History of Crime and Criminal Justice and the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme. His doctoral thesis was also recognized in 2020 with the Henri Pirenne Fund Grant from the Royal Academy of Belgium.
At UCLouvain, Quentin is a member of the Centre de recherches en histoire du droit, des institutions et de la société (CRHiDI) and the Louvain Lab for Law, History and Society (LHS), and teaches historical methodology to undergraduate students.
